Mountains cover about a quarter of the earth's surface and are home to over a billion people. Mountain regions provide vital resources such as water for a quarter of the world's population and are hotspots of biodiversity.

Due to its special location in the middle of the Alps, the University of Innsbruck has a long tradition of researching mountain areas and is one of the world's leading mountain research institutions. Comprehensive, interdisciplinary expertise and numerous research infrastructures practically on the doorstep enable a high-quality range of training courses.

Thanks to their comprehensive understanding, graduates of the program are able to contribute to the sustainable development of mountain regions.

The Extension Programme Mountain Regions at the University of Innsbruck is aimed at students who wish to broaden their qualification profile through scientifically sound additional training in the field of mountain research.

Graduates of the Mountain Regions extension programme:

  • have an interdisciplinary understanding of natural and cultural processes and phenomena in mountain regions and their interactions.
  • are able to analyse and evaluate conditions and processes in mountain regions using various methods.
  • are qualified in a special way and in addition to their individual specialisation for research, teaching and applied professions related to mountain regions

The basic career opportunities arise from the main study. This extension course offers advantages for careers in which an interdisciplinary understanding of mountain regions is an essential and valuable additional qualification.

Admission to the Mountain Regions extension programme requires a previous degree or admission to one of the following Master's or Diploma programmes:
