Open Access publishing in hybrid journals: you can continue to publish open access in hybrid journals free of charge. If you have any questions, please contact us at: ulb-emedien@uibk.ac.at.

Since January 2021, a new offer allows university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck to publish open access free of charge in gold open access journals of Elsevier in addition to hybrid journals. Hence, members of both universities can publish open access in many journals free of charge. All participating journals are listed here.
The offer applies to articles submitted to hybrid journals starting from 1 January 2020 and to articles submitted to gold open access journal starting from 1 January 2021. Therefore, for Elsevier journals the date of submission is relevant and not the date of acceptance.
Which journals can researchers of the universities publish in?
You can publish open access in many hybrid journals and gold open access journals. You can find a list of all eligible journals here.
Who can publish open access?
Eligible are authors, who
- are corresponding authors of the articles
- are university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck
- use their institutional email address in the process of submission
- submit an article to an Elsevier hybrid journal after 31 December 2019, which will then be accepted
- submit an article to an Elsevier gold open access journal after 31 December 2020, which will then be accepted
- are publishing an article of the type full-length article or review article
ATTENTION: It is not permitted to retrospectively change the corresponding author after peer review.
Procedure/Verification Process:
Please indicate your affiliation to the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck when submitting the article. The verification of the authors' affiliation with the universities is based on the indication of the institution and the use of the institutional email domain. After the authorisation through the University Library, the author will receive a licence agreement by Elsevier, which he/she must sign and return to the publisher – via the author dashboard – together with the selected CC licence.
IMPORTANT NOTE on the impact factor: For some of its subscription-based journals, Elsevier has established corresponding gold open access journals, so-called mirror journals.
You can recognise these mirror journals by the suffix X in the title. Please note that the impact factor of these journals is usually lower than that of the corresponding subscription-based journal.
FWF projects: since January 2021, the FWF is also part of our agreement. The publication costs of articles resulting from an FWF-funded project are settled by the FWF.
Please note: The FWF only funds articles published under the CC-BY licence.
