Prof. Mikkola has been a "LFUI-Guestprofessor" for two months in 2017. He received his Ph.D. degree in the field of machine design in 1997. Since 2002, he has been working as a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Lappeenranta, Finland. Currently, he leads the research team of the Laboratory of Machine Design.

Prof. Mikkola has given a public lecture entitled "Real-time Simulation and Online Teaching of Mechanical Engineering Subjects". During the enjoyable lecture, he presented his current research, in particular real-life simulators for maritime cranes, and his online teaching methods.

During the guest professorship at the University of Innsbruck, he gave lectures within the courses "Multibody Dynamics (850260)" and "Hydraulic and Pneumatic Drives (850254)".

During the visiting period, Prof. Mikkola and his team published a journal paper in co-operation with Prof. Gerstmayr. The paper introduced a procedure based on the combined semi-recursive and lumped fluid methods for computationally efficient dynamic analysis of hydraulically driven machines. Gerstmayr and Mikkola also proposed a joint master thesis topic for a LFUI student. The objective of the master thesis is to verify a recently developed wire rope model by employing commercial finite element and multibody system dynamics software.

The international cooperative research environment between LFUI and LUT will be maintained through researcher visit and exchange. During the upcoming semester, Prof. Gerstmayr will visit the LUT and deliver a course concerning numerical integration schemes in multibody system dynamics for doctoral students.

The LFUI and, specifically, the Institute of Mechatronics and the students in mechatronics are very grateful to Prof. Mikkola for his kind and inspiring visit.
