Alpine meadows, mixed forests with pines and larches, dwarf shrub heaths – a closer look at the alpine region where the timberline adjoins human settlements reveals a multitude of habitats. The inner Ötztal valley is an impressive example of constant alternation of cultural and natural landscape due to human land-use since thousands of years.

This publication presents the current state of research on these special habitats, including the influence of agricultural land-use on plant composition of alpine meadows, the importance of field names as an aid of orientation and code for communication, the historical evolution of the region revealed by archaeological findings and analysis of tree cores, and many other issues.
