Piburger See

Der Piburger See ist ein Bergsee oberhalb der Gemeinde Ötz auf einer Höhe von 913 m über dem Meer. Er hat eine Fläche von circa 14 ha und einer maximalen Tiefe von 25 m. Der See wurde 1929 als Naturdenkmal ausgewiesen, seit den 30er Jahren werden aus ihm Daten erhoben. Limnochemische Datenreihen gibt es seit den 1960er und 1970er Jahren. Damit dürfte der Piburger See der am besten untersuchte See Tirols sein. Durch die intensive Nutzung der Weideflächen und des angrenzenden Badebetriebes geriet der See in den kritischen Zustand einer Eutrophierung. Durch die Installation eines Olszewski-Rohres 1970 konnte er saniert werden und befindet sich heute in einem oligo-mesotrophen Zustand.

Kernstück dieser Forschungsstätte ist eine Messplattform im See mit einer Wetterstation und Sonden zur Messung von Temperatur, Leitfähigkeit, pH-Wert und Sauerstoffsättigung des Wassers. Die Sensoren sind im ganzjährig in Betrieb, die Datenübertragung erfolgt online.

Erforscht werden am Piburger See u.a. das Bakterioplankton und mixotrophe Einzeller aber auch die Schichtung des Sees unter dem Einfluss klimatischer Veränderungen.

Der Piburger See ist ein LTER (Long-Term Ecosystem Research) Standort der LTSER Plattform Tyrolean Alps und LTER Austria. Außerdem ist der See ein wichtiger Ausbildungsort für Studierende der Ökologie.
