Using LEO 3/3e and LEO 4

In order to use the HPC infrastructure of the Research Area Scientific Computing any individual employed at the University of Innsbruck can apply for an account on one of the Research Area's computers. (See the ZID's documentation page for an overview of available systems and further instructions.) To apply for an account you have to download and fill in the application form and have it signed by one of the authorised representatives of the Research Area Scientific Computing. Those are either heads of affiliated research centres, of affiliated organisational units or of affiliated work groups. Please choose your authorised representative according to your field of interest and research. If you are not a member of an affiliated organisational unit or work group and also do not intend to become one, the application can also be approved directly by the head of the Resarch Area Scientific Computing.

User Obligations

All users of the Research Area's computing infrastructure, including LEO 3/3e and LEO 4, are required to assign all resulting publications to the Research Area Scientific Computing within the Research Documentaiton Database (RDD) = Forschungsleistungsdokumentation (FLD) of the University of Innsbruck and to add the following statement to each publication's acknowledgment:

The computational results presented have been achieved (in part) using the HPC infrastructure LEO of the University of Innsbruck.

In addition, members of the Research Area Scientific Computing are encouraged to present their work at the interdisciplinary HPC seminar.

Using VSC-3

Users from the University of Innsbruck can apply for cpu time for scientific projects on the VSC according to the procedure outlined below. Please note that in contrast to the procedures at the University of Innsbruck users do not get a personal account valied throughout the employment at the Universitiy of Innsbruck. Instead users are required to apply for computing time on a project-by-project basis.

User Obligations

All users of the Research Area's computing infrastructure, including VSC-3, are required to assign all resulting publications to the Research Area Scientific Computing within the Research Documentaiton Database (RDD) = Forschungsleistungsdokumentation (FLD) of the University of Innsbruck.

All users of the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) are asked to acknowledge the VSC in publications. For further Information please click on the following link: more »

In addition, members of the Research Area Scientific Computing are encouraged to present their work at the interdisciplinary HPC seminar.

Using MACH2

Users from the University of Innsbruck can also get an account for the shared memory system MACH2 (see the ZID's documentation page on MACH2), especially if their demand is not met by LEO or VSC. For information on the respective application procedure please click here.

User Obligations

All users of the Research Area's computing infrastructure, including MACH, are required to assign all resulting publications to the Research Area Scientific Computing within the Research Documentaiton Database (RDD) = Forschungsleistungsdokumentation (FLD) of the University of Innsbruck and to add the following statement to each publication's acknowledgment:

The computational results presented have been achieved (in part) using the HPC infrastructure of the University of Innsbruck.

In addition, members of the Research Area Scientific Computing are encouraged to present their work at the interdisciplinary HPC seminar.

Using one of the European Supercomputers via PRACE

The PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) is Europe's largest association enhancing high performance computing (HPC) across several nations, including Austria. Details on PRACE's mission are stated here.

Application Procedure

In order to obtain access to any of the PRACE resources it is necessary to propose a project in the course of "Calls for Proposals". All submitted proposals are subject to a peer-reviewed process. For detailed information on the proposal process please click here. If you are interested in a practical guide please click here.

For calls for tier-0 proposals (i.e. the supercomputers CURIE, FERMI; Hazel Hen, JUQUEEN, MareNostrum and SuperMUC) please click here.

For calls for tier-1 proposals (smaller systems, but still larger than the local infrastructure) please click here.

User Obligations

All users of the Research Area's computing infrastructure, including the PRACE facilities, are required to assign all resulting publications to the Research Area Scientific Computing within the Research Documentaiton Database (RDD) = Forschungsleistungsdokumentation (FLD) of the University of Innsbruck.

In addition, members of the Research Area Scientific Computing are encouraged to present their work at the interdisciplinary seminar HPC computing.
