Research | Public relations | Teaching | Summer School

Restorations of the architectural remains and the renewal of the Archaeological Park take place in close cooperation with the Curatorium Pro Agunto, the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments (Bundesdenkmalamt), and the REVITAL Company. The scientifically sound presentation of the findings considers the conservation necessities (restorer Franz Brunner). Since 2017, the knowledge gained from this project is also applied to the restoration project "The episcopal church of Lavant". The presentation of the archaeological remains in Aguntum and Lavant should be as true to the original as possible, durable in terms of restoration, and aesthetically pleasing. In addition to these activities in the open-air site, the Museum Aguntum is constantly being expanded and international workshops serve to discuss scientific results and questions.

The Outdoor area of the Aguntum Archaeological Park

The renewal of the Archaeological Park (supervised by the Curatorium Pro Agunto Curatorship ([Dr. Leo Gomig]) allows for a contemporary presentation of the excavation results. After excavation and documentation, most ancient building structures will be brought back underground and reconstructed on the surface as faithfully as possible. The Curatorium Pro Agunto is the main actor in the design of the outdoor area, a task that began in the 1990s with the upgrading of the archaeological park and is supported by the Aguntum Research Area at the Institute of Archaeology.

Aguntum Museum

The Research Area Aguntum at the Institute of Archaeologies scientifically supervises the Aguntum Museum, completed in 2006. Almost 15 years after its opening, a reorganization is currently taking place. The first step is the presentation of the finds from the current excavations in the center of the municipium.

 The “Episcopal Church” in Lavant

Due to its location on the mountain and the embedding of the ruin in the landscape, the early Christian church of Lavant is a tourist attraction in East Tyrol. In recent decades, the state of preservation of the structure has gradually deteriorated, necessitating extensive conservation measures. In cooperation with a team of archaeologists, restorers, building researchers, and material scientists, the Research Area Aguntum is taking over the scientific management of the project. The aim of the project is, besides the clarification of open scientific questions, the contemporary presentation of the restored church in the next years.
