Library services for students

At the start of the semester, we provide an overview of the wide range of services offered by the University and Provincial Library of the Tyrol and wish you a successful academic year.

Lending and returning We deliver media items ordered via our search portal to one of seven library locations in the city area. Borrowed items can be prebooked - we will inform you by e-mail once they have been returned. Items can be returned at all locations.

Students at the LFU, who are writing a Diploma or Master’s Thesis or a Dissertation, can apply for extended loan periods via LFU:Online for a limited period of one year ("My forms” – Create new – Application special library conditions).

Barrier-free access is possible at all locations and sub-libraries.

You are welcome to send us order suggestions using the appropriate form on our website (under A-Z). We will check them and notify you if necessary.

For students of the Leopold-Franzens-University, the Management Center and the Medical University of Innsbruck the student card is valid as a library card. You can log in to "BibSearch" with your LFU, MCI or MUI ID.

In our BibSearch“ search portal you can find approx. 90% of our print and online holdings, in particular articles from e-journals and e-books from all subject areas. The old holdings are mapped in the nominal catalogue. You can use our media on site, borrow or download them.

The Digital Library includes digitised prints from our historical holdings as well as monographs, university publications and journals, but also “born-digital” resources of the University of Innsbruck. It is constantly being updated.

Digitization for blind and visually impaired students: Books or scripts are scanned by us and the text is recognized using OCR software. Texts are prepared in such a way that they contain headings, footnotes and the like that are marked as such.

We have a large selection of e-books, e-journals and databases from all specialist areas and publishers. Individual databases are only accessible to members of the university or within certain faculties. Information on access restrictions can be found in our database information system (DBIS).

Works that are free of copyright can be ordered for a fee via our eBooks on Demand and Reprint Service for digitization and then as a reprint.

Interlibrary loan – the procurement of literature that is not available in Innsbruck – is subject to a charge. Media are sent to us from a library home or abroad and then passed on to you.

Remote access to databases, e-journals and e-books from outside of the university campus via VPN. It can be EXCLUSIVELY used by members of the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck. Please note the terms of use and the special regulations for legal databases.

In our reading rooms you can work in a relaxed and concentrated manner in a quiet environment, provided you book your place in advance. Printing, copying and scanning is possible with the equipment on site.

A software for literature management makes scientific work easier. It enables the easy recording of  sources (magazine articles, books, websites…). We offer free use of “Citavi”, “Zotero” and “EndNote” as well as introductory and advanced courses.

We provide a wide range of non-scientific digital media to borrow (eBooks, ePapers, eMusic, eAudios and eVideos) for e-book readers and other devices via the Onleihe e-book tirol service.

The imparting of information literacy is one of our central tasks. We offer training courses on research and reference management. In addition, we provide supplementary materials via the OLAT-course “BibSearch, Datenbank and more“.

Our historical collections combine valuable book holdings as well as the library archive. It can be used in the department's reading room by prior arrangement.

In our writing centre we offer writing workshops and guided writing groups for students and researchers, and we work with instructors to develop elements for teaching writing in courses.

As a provincial library we collect literature from and about the Tyrol.  It is our job to make as many works relating to the Tyrol (Tirolensien) available digitally. In cooperation with various university institutes we can prepare Tyrolean-specific collections of materials.

Free one-day and fee-based long-term rental lockers are available in all libraries. Please enquire on site.

Scientific final theses: Students of diploma, master or doctoral programmes at the University of Innsbruck are obliged to hand in their theses not only in print, but also digitally in PDF-form.
