Research at the Department of Media, Society and Communication is characterized by an integration of approaches from the social sciences and cultural studies. Another core concern is the motives for connecting basic, research-oriented reflection on media theory, social sciences and cultural history with the teaching of methodical and practical media literacy.

Specifically, we are currently working on projects in the following areas:

  • European and global dimensions of media and communication studies,
  • Political communication in media-centered democracies, medialization and mediatization of politics, media and ethnic minorities,
  • Media education, media competence and media literacy, medialization of processes of education, knowledge and communication,
  • Public culture of communication and discourse,
  • Visual cultures and media practices
