What does the Senate do?

The Senate is one of the three governing bodies of the university and the only one with direct democratic legitimacy. It:

  • enacts the statutes of the university (on the proposal of the rectorate)

  • gives its approval to the development plan and the organizational plan

  • determines the size of the University Council and elects some of its members

  • plays a decisive role in the process of electing the rector and, to a limited extent, in appointing the vice rectors

  • participates in habilitation and faculty appointment procedures
  • issues and amends study curricula

  • establishes collegial bodies with and without decision-making powers as well as a working group for equal opportunities

  • should – in the opinion of SPAF – comment on all important university policy agendas and collaborate on proposals for solutions
