City as an accumulation of miniature structures
Shenzhen metapolis; “city of exacerbated difference”

When we talk about the contemporary city, we have already identified it with series of urban qualities such as diversity, density, heterogeneity and three dimensionality. But how we can read the contemporary city? What it is and how it operates?

Following by Deng Xiaoping’s opening policies in 1978, China went under a huge campaign of urbanization. The wave of rapid urban development took over all the country, Villages and towns turned into cities and cities turned into megalopolises. In this situation, Shenzhen experienced the most radical shift and fastest urban development, as within less than 30 years a small county turned into a mega city which Architects began to discover again. Shenzhen was a heterogeneous accumulation of miniature structures. it is a hybrid. a “city of exacerbated difference” as Rem Koolhaas and his students described in the book project of the city.
