He was awarded a Masters degree in IS from the University of Bamberg, a PhD from the University of Regensburg, and a Habilitation degree from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. After his studies he worked for several years as IT consultant. In 1998 he joined the IS Department at the University of Regensburg, and in 2002 he completed his PhD on the topic of ´process-oriented Knowledge Management´. From 2002-2006 he took on an Assistant Professorship at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany and worked as visiting research scholar at the University of Wellington, New Zealand. In 2006 he moved back to New Zealand and until 2012 he held a position as Senior Lecturer of Information Systems at the University of Canterbury. In September 2012, he was appointed as Professor of Information Systems at the School of Management, University of Innsbruck, Austria, and since April 2014 he heads the unit ´Digital Society’.

His research focuses on IS project management and control, algorithmic management, the future of work, and negative impacts of IS on individuals and society. Ulrich has authored and co-authored more than 80 papers in journals, books and major IS conference proceedings, such as ICIS, ECIS, PACIS; ACIS, AMCIS, and Wirtschaftsinformatik. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in leading IS journals, such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, and others. He regularly serves as Track Chair and Associate Editor for major IS conferences, such as ECIS and ICIS, and is on the Editorial Board of Information & Management. Overall, his work has been cited over 2000 times, and won best paper awards and nominations, e.g. at ICIS and HICSS.

Currently, he is leading the publicly funded research project ‘Understanding Gig Workers Resistance to Algorithmic Control’ (ReACt) received from FWF (2021-2024, 326.782 Euros).

He is also a Lead Author of the APCC Assessment Report on Climate Change in Austria with regard to the topic ‘Digitalization in the Circular Economy’ (2022- 2025, ~2 million Euros). https://ccca.ac.at/en/climate-knowledge/apcc
