Postdoctoral positions at Xi’an Jiaotong University, China

Announced: 22.01.2019

Postdoctoral positions in speleothem-based paleoclimate research at Xi’an Jiaotong University, China

The Isotope Laboratory ( ) in the Institute of Global Environmental Change, Xi’an Jiaotong University, China is looking for two postdocs to work on speleothem-based paleoclimate research. The new postdocs will have the opportunity to work on their own research project using the facilities of the Isotope Laboratory of Xi’an Jiaotong University. The typical contract is for 2 years, with a possibility of renewal. Benefits include a competitive salary and in-campus housing for a symbolic rent fee. The selected candidates will be offered a new computer from University. Additional funding is also available for field work.

Xi'an Jiaotong University ( is one of the best University in China, originally founded in 1896. The Xi’an Jiaotong University Isotope Laboratory is a highly-interactive research facility of speleothem paleoclimate research. The working group members are from different countries, with a diverse professional and academic backgrounds. We are developing various isotope and trace element methods to reconstruct high-resolution and absolutely-dated speleothem-based proxy records from different climatic domains. The central aim is to understand the climate history in different climate systems, their dynamic relation and interplay, as well as underlying mechanisms.

Available equipment includes:

  • Superclean room and MC-ICP MS (Neptune plus) for U-Th dating

  • MAT253 plus, MAT 253 and Delta V plus isotope ratio mass spectrometers for stable isotope measurements

  • High vacuum system for the pretreatment of 17O measurement

  • Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy  (LIBS) for fast trace-elements analysis

  • High vacuum system connected with Picarro water isotope analyzer for the measurement of speleothem fluid conclusion

  • Picarro water isotope analyzer for water isotope analysis

  • Micromill for high-resolution subsampling

  • Diamond wire saw for cutting speleothem samples

  • Access to other university equipment includes confocal microscope for layer counting, XRD, thin sections, SEM etc.

  • Relevant software is available in the lab’s computers

 Applicants will have:
  • A Ph.D. degree
  • A solid background in speleothem-based paleoclimate research
  • At least one first author paper published in a SCI journal
  • Demonstrated communication skills in English

 Ideal applicants will have:

  • Strong analytical skills, including MC-ICP-MS, MAT253 and clean-lab experience
  • Access to speleothem samples from key climate regions, for example, a monsoon or westerly climate regime

 Contract requirements:

  • Publish the results of their research in SCI journals.
  • Apply for funding to the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation and/or other funding sources.
  • Participate in other lab-related working group activities

  • The income of a new postdoc is composed a basic salary provided by the university (pre-tax 150,000 RMB/year; delivered monthly) and Shaanxi provincial subsistence allowance (after tax 60,000 RMB/year; delivered after the end of the contract).
