Call for Workshops

TRANSLATA V is the fifth in a series of triennial conferences on Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Innsbruck. This conference series was established in 2011 and, from the outset, has always been one of the largest conferences on Translation and Interpreting Studies worldwide. TRANSLATA is a conference devoted to basic research in translatology with the principle aim of re-establishing translation proper (= professional translation and interpreting) as the core focus of Translation and Interpreting Studies.

The theme of TRANSLATA V is intended to reflect the interdisciplinary orientation of translation studies. Under the general theme of “Interfaces in Translation“, TRANSLATA V will provide a forum for all those working in translation in a theoretical, practical, didactic and commercial context to discuss current issues in translation and its links to other disciplines.

Workshops and abstracts

This year, TRANSLATA will take place in the format of a section conference. Interested parties can apply with their own thematic workshops until the 12th of April 2024. The application period for presentations for individual workshops and for the General Section is open between the 1st of April 2024 and the 30th of June 2024.

Training translators and interpreters in the digital age

Workshop languages: German, English, Spanish

In this workshop, we would like to shed light on these questions through relevant contributions and debates. We therefore invite all interested colleagues to submit an abstract in German, English or Spanish on one of the following topics:

  • Remodelling or redesigning curricula to integrate new technologies
  • New technologies as a subject in order to develop digital literacy
  • New technologies and competence development
  • New technologies in translation-oriented language training
  • New technologies in translation teaching
  • New technologies in interpreting teaching
  • New technologies in scientifically oriented subjects


Submission: We ask all interested colleagues to send their abstract in at least one of the work-shop languages to the following e-mail addresses by 30 June 2024: astrid.schmidhofer@uibk.ac.at. and mcbalbuena@uco.es.

Interprofessional education in interpreting studies

Workshop languages: German, English, Spanish, Italian

With this workshop, we aim to contribute to giving visibility to such undocumented initiatives and to facilitate an exchange within the field of interpreting didactics. We are looking for contributions regarding IPE projects that deal with the following questions and aspects:

Which fields of study or training programmes are particularly interesting for IPE?

  • What is the concrete added value of such cooperation?
  • What methodological challenges arise for interpreting didactics?
  • Which teaching concepts can be implemented? How can they be evaluated?
  • What does the concrete cooperation in IPE (planning, implementation, follow-up and evaluation) look like? What are challenges for teachers and students?
  • How does cooperation between students from different disciplines differ from cooperation between interpreting students and ‘fully trained’ experts?

Playgrounds of Translation. Texts, pictures and songs for children in interlingual and intercultural transfer

Workshop languages: German, English, Spanish, Italian

The aim of this workshop is to take a closer look at the playgrounds of child-centred communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries. We therefore invite international researchers to share their perspectives on the particular challenges and opportunities related to the inter- and intralingual translation of children's literature. The following questions can (but do not have to) serve as a starting point:

  • What strategies do children's book translators develop with regard to prototypical characteristics such as rhymes, rhythms, speaking names, images, etc.?
  • How does the representation of universal themes such as diversity, friendship, justice, courage, duties, etc. change when they are adapted to the circumstances and views of different cultural areas?
  • Which elements of the regional language and regional culture find their way into child-centred communication? And what impact does this have on the localisation of children's literature?
  • What does the adaptation of children's literature look like in pluricentric language areas?

Interfaces in specialised communication

Workshop languages: German, English, Spanish, Italian, French

Specialist terminology is very much in demand in the world of work: from medicine, law and technology to business and art. New technologies are contributing more and more to the sys-tematic documentation of specialised terms, but one will not always find everything one is looking for. This workshop will therefore provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges, tools and possible strategies for translating sectoral texts. Interdisciplinary approaches are also welcome. Abstracts should concern the following topics:

  • Specialised communication history 
  • Theories of specialised communication
  • Specialised communication in university teaching/learner texts
  • Specialised communication in lexicography and databases
  • Specialised communication and translation software
  • Specialised communication and artificial intelligence
  • Translation strategies for specialised communication
  • Specialised communication at the interface with linguistics
  • Specialised communication at the interface with cultural studies

Translation and multilingualism in health communication

Workshop languages: German, English, French

In a multicultural society, multilingualism and translation are required in the healthcare sector. Understanding health information and being properly understood in the case of health problems can be vital. We see health communication as a broad field that includes both physical and mental health, both medicine and pharmaceuticals. In our workshop, we would like to take into account forms of oral and written, internal and external communication, different text types, settings, and forms of discourse in health communication.

Abstracts can be submitted on the following topics:

  • Health information: multilingualism and translation
  • Text types in medicine and pharmaceuticals: target groups, semiotics, and translation
  • (Translation-supported) forms of discourse and settings of health communication
  • Risk and crisis communication: text, language, images, and translation
  • Interpreting situations in individual medical disciplines
  • Specialised terminology and lay terminology
  • New technologies in medical and pharmaceutical text creation and translation
  • Interpretation software
  • Training for medical translators and interpreters
