In the summer of 2009, at the initiative of Prof. Ingeborg Ohnheiser (Department of Slavonic Studies) an agreement has been signed between the "Russkiy mir" Foundation and the University of Innsbruck on the establishment of a Russian Center, the first of its kind in Austria. The grand opening took place on 26.01.2011 in the presence of representatives of the foundation, the diplomatic service and the university.

The main goals of this centre were to teach the Russian language and culture, to increase cooperation between teachers and researchers at the University of Innsbruck and Russian colleagues, but also to offer a wide range of cultural and scientific events for everyone who is interested in Russia, both professionally and privately and/or speak Russian. Cooperation with schools and other educational institutions in Tyrol where Russian is taught, as well as the exchange with Russian-speaking people living in Tyrol, has always been particularly important to us.

Since the beginning of 2013, the Russian Center, together with the other four centres for area studies (France Focus, Italy Centre, Center for Inter-American Studies and Canadian Studies Centre) is part of the then newly created organizational unit "International Services", which pursues the goal of coordinating, bundling and servicing the international activities of the University of Innsbruck.

In March 2022, due to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, which cannot be justified by anything, the cooperation with the "Russkiy mir" Foundation was terminated on the part of the University of Innsbruck. In the course of this, the focus on the Eastern Europe region was expanded, and the centre was renamed the "Centre for Eastern European Studies".
