Enrico Grube's Research

Research project granted by Austrian Science Fund (FWF): 4e Cognition in Theological Anthropology

As a philosopher I focused on analytic philosophy of mind, especially theories of perception and consciousness. I wrote a dissertation on the experience of temporal properties (‘time consciousness’) and the ontological structure of the stream of consciousness (University of Texas, 2013).

During my time as a Dominican friar (2015-2020) I turned towards theology, with an emphasis on the “Dominican masters” Thomas Aquinas and Meister Eckhart, as well as Augustine and current trends in theological anthropology.

My current research combines these fields: I’m interested in a critique of the digital, functionalist or representationalist anthropology from the perspective of an alternative holistic, relational anthropology that has its origins in Augustine and the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition and can be fruitfully combined with the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty and his inheritors in embodied cognitive science and enactivism.

Further research interests: philosophy and theology of Thomas Aquinas and Meister Eckhart; the problem of divine hiddenness from the perspective of apophatic theology.
