General Questions about the Intensive Courses (selection of courses and placement)

Are the courses held face-to-face?
Yes. The Intensive Courses German in September are held face-to-face.
Are these courses right for me?
Our courses are for adults and are tailored to meet the needs of experienced learners. Our courses are renowned for their high level of learning standards and continual class participation. This enables participants to achieve an accerlerated learning curve.
The Intensive Courses German last three weeks. They take place in the last three weeks of September. Classes are from Monday to Friday from 09:00 am to 12:30 am, including a 30-minute break.
What courses are there? What levels are there?

How many participants are in the courses?
On average, there are about 18 people in each course. The number of participants is limited to 23 in order to be able to ensure an environment conductive to learning, and the provision of individual support from the teaching staff.
Is there a minimum number of participants?
Yes. There must be a minimum of eleven participants for the course to take place.
Who are the instructors? Who will be my instructor?
Our instructors are highly motivated and academically qualified with many years of teaching experience and a high level of didactic competence. The latest teaching methods are continuously corporated into the lesson plans.
Will all four skills be taught?
Yes, the classes are designed to develop your listening and reading comprehension, writing as well as oral skills. The learning objectives and content of the courses are based on the level requirements of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

This is how it works:
- Here you can find our online placement test for German as a foreign language.
The placement test consists of reading comprehension, listening comprehension and grammar/vocabulary. The placement test is easy at the beginning and becomes increasingly more difficult. After submitting the placement test electronically, you will promptly receive a course recommendation. - With the help of these self assessment checklists, you can also assess your language skills yourself:

Do I have to take the placement test? Do I have to provide proof of my knowledge of German?
No. The placement test is not a requirement. However, it can help you find the right course.
Yes. With the permission and help of your teacher, you can switch into a new course during the first two days of the course.
Are costs for the course books included in the cours fees?
No. The course books are not included in the course fees.
How much learning is involved?
In addition to the lessons, please allow time for homework, preparations for the lessons and preparation time for the exam.
Yes, as a general rule, there will be homework.

Registration and Deregistration (Cancellations), General Terms and Conditions
When can I register for the courses?
You can register for the Intensive Courses German starting from mid-May until just before the courses begin.
How can I register and pay for the Intensive Courses German?
You can register both online and in person at the Language Centre office.
How does online registration work?
You can book your language course at the Language Centre online via our webpage course programme and pay by credit card, online banking or PayPal.
Students and staff members of the University of Innsbruck need their username and email password.
All other applicants must first register with LFU:online before using the online registration and payment system.
How can I register in person at the course office?
Please bring a completed registration form with you. You can pay the course fee in cash, by ATM card or credit card.
Do I get a registration confirmation?
If you register online, you will automatically receive a registration and payment confrmation as soon as you have paid the course fee.
If you register directly at the Language Centre office, you will receive your registration and payment confirmation directly from us.
Deregistration (Cancellations)
If you have booked your course online, the 14-day right of withdrawal applies. If you wish to cancel the course, please send us an email and/or the completed cancellation form enclosed with your registration confirmation. For detailed information on the right of withdrawal in the case of a consumer transaction within the meaning of the Consumer Protection Act, please see our General Terms an Conditions.
If you have booked your course directly with us at the course office, the cancellation conditions according to our General Terms and Conditions apply. Please simply send us an email if you wish to cancel your course. Up to one week before the start of the course, the course fee paid will be reimbursed minus a processing fee of 25 per cent. For deregistration from a course after that date, no refund can be made. The exact cancellation conditions can be found in our General Terms and Conditions.
I'm already in a course, but would like to cancel it. What can I do?
Please let us know if you can no longer attend the course. We will inform your instructor. Unfortunately, a refund of the course fee is not possible after the start of the course.
Could a course get cancelled by the Language Centre?
In exceptional cases, a course may have to be cancelled due to too few participants. In this case, we will inform you by email and try to find a solution, for example by finding an alternative course for you. If this is not possible for you, we will of course refund all course fees that have been paid.
When will I know if the course will take place for sure?
We always assume that the courses will take place as planned. You will only receive a notification if the courses have to be cancelled due to too few participants.
If a course has to be cancelled by the Language Centre, the course fees already paid will be refunded. The payment will be made by bank transfer to the account specified by you.

Course Requiements, Certificates and ECTS credits
Is there a final exam in the Intensive Courses German? When does the exam take place?
Yes. There will be an exam on the last Thursday before the end of the course.
What will be tested and how is the final exam evaluated? What are the course requirements?
The final exam consists of a written and a speaking part. The written part includes a listening comprehension section, a reading comprehension section and a writing section. The oral part assesses your speaking skills. All four skills are equally weighted. To pass the exam, you must pass each part (at least 60 per cent).
I missed the final test. Can I make up the exam or part of it?
No. The exam date is set on Thursday before the end of the course for the whole group. It is therefore not possible to take the exam - or part of it - on another date.
I failed the final test. Can I re-take the exam or part of it?
No. Unfortunately, that is not possible.
Are there standard assessment criteria for the Intensive Courses German?
Yes, our language courses have standard assessment criteria for the assessment of final exams. This makes it possible to compare and evaluate the student's performance. In this way they contribute to the transparency of the assessment.
In addition, the examination culture of the Language Centre also sees itself as having a feedback culture. This means that standard and comprehensible assessment criteria for the individual areas allow the course instructors to give you individual feedback on your performance in the individual areas. In this way, your personal learning process will be supported, and you will know which areas you need to work on to improve.

Certificate of Achievement/Participation
Do I get a course certificate after completing the course?
Yes. You will receive a course certificate. In order to receive the course certificate you must be present at least 80 per cent of the course, and you must take the final exam.
As a student at the University of Innsbruck, you can access or print your certificate directly via LFU:online.
External participants and staff members of the University of Innsbruck can receive the certificate from the office of the Language Centre. On request, we will also be happy to send your certificate by post.
Is the course certificate accepted everywhere?
Each institute can decide if the course certificate is accepted or not. Please enquire in advance at the respective institution to see if it will be accepted or not.
Is attendance required in the courses?
No. But please keep in mind that you will only receive a course certificate if you are present for at least 80 per cent of the course.
Can I receive a certificate of attendance even if I have not taken the exam?
Yes. If you are present for at least 70 per cent of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance. In order to obtain a certificate of attendance it is not necessary to take the final exam. You can, however, still sit the final exam if desired.
How many ECTS credits can I get for the Intensive Courses German?
You will receive three ECTS credits for a three-week course. Remember, you must be present at least 80 per cent of the course and pass the final exam.
How do I receive ECTS credits for my study programme? How does that work?
Your university will decide on how the ECTS credits will be accredited. Please ask your university if the certificates from the Language Centre of the University of Innsbruck are recognised.
Miscellaneous
No. Unfortunately, the Language Centre does not organise accommodation.
