Contentual description

Due to globalisation and discussions about crises of meaning and orientation ethical questions again attract wide interest. Problems regarding to “what is right to be done” become apparent in a society that is affected by science, technology and economy. The global economy faces new and difficult challenges, because its structures have to be organised in a fair and just manner. Individual charity and single aid projects, as indispensable as they may be, are not sufficient. The participation of many states and the authority of international institutions will be needed for equalisation/equity. The global responsibility towards the community, which has become necessary due to ecological, economic and technical risks, cannot be reached solely by appeals, but only by the realisation of the principle of a concrete humanity.

In a close connection with problems of global ethics there is also the question about the relationship between religions and cultures due to the danger of fundamentalist movements. The call for more democracy and human rights will not be enough to maintain the communication between the cultures and further promote the dialogue. Intercultural dialogue is a prerequisite for avoiding the escalation of cultural conflicts. The European continent undoubtedly plays an important role in mediation due to its cultural diversity and its integration achievements of political cultures. In a future Europe with people from different cultures a culture of tolerance is very important. What we need is the development of an European model of tolerance to conserve the cultural identity and the culture of the different-minded.
