Research Objectives

The Research Center Education – Generation – Lifecourse (FZ BGL) is a multidimensional organisation. For one, it is positioned in the dynamic field between social change in modern societies and educational policy-making. Moreover, it is oriented towards the entire spectrum of themes that ranges from social inclusion to interculturality as a principle. Thus, the overall focus is on the concept of life-long, life-wide and life-deep learning in formal, non-formal, and informal learning contexts.

This background gives rise to a number of important questions, such as:

  • How can the learning spectrum, comprising informal, non-formal and formal learning, be optimally used to support the development of the knowledge society?
  • Which relationships exist between the different forms of learning and developmental dynamics? What are the implications for teaching/learning across the full spectrum of educational settings and institutionalised educational environments?
  • Which educational needs exist for the conditions and relationships within and between generations? Which strategies and frameworks might be most meaningful and effective here?
  • How do people develop specific competences, be they vocational or social, (inter)cultural or political, in particular with a view to fostering democratic citizenship?
  • How can educational action actively support social change and development and/or meaningfully and effectively address societal needs – in particular with a view to a society that is multicultural and ever more influenced by social, economic, and political tensions?

The Research Center performs both quantitative and qualitative research work at international, national, and regional levels as well as in local contexts. The many connections between research, politics, and professional practice manifest themselves in the form of cooperative research projects between the Research Center and representatives of those various fields as well as in the explicit subjects of study addressed by the Center’s research projects. Above and beyond that, these connections function as a research framework and are thus an integral part of the Center’s critical and reflective dealings with its own research practices.
