Their work confronts the colonial legacy that has shaped Canada’s national narrative and remains buried within the politics of the nation, institutions, and dominant mainstream values. Historically, visual culture has played a role in constructing national identity. Similarly, the artists featured in this presentation use their visual practice to address issues of history and identity in a process of re-constructing a narrative, which also includes those Canadians perceived as “multicultural”. KONZERT Indie folk darling Basia Bulat’s second album Heart of My Own is out January 26, and it’s every bit as enjoyable as her 2008 Polaris Prize shortlisted debut. Heart of My Own was largely written on the road, taking inspiration from the sights and sounds experienced on tour. The Yukon had a great effect on her, as can be heard on lead single "Gold Rush". The singer took some time to chat with Ca Va Cool before her tour kicked into high gear..... In Kooperation mit dem Verein Innpuls mit Unterstützung des Zentrums für Kanadastudien. Datum: Dienstag, 10. August 2010, 20.00 h |
KONZERT La Querelle "Holing up retreat in a basement studio in the woods outside of Montreal, the new group began crafting their sound. The band built an epic post-rock reminiscent of acts like Mogwai and the Mercury Program with a building, driving rhythm section. The songs are sung with the heartfelt, poignant lyricism of classic ‘90s emo bands like Elliott and Sunny Day Real Estate. la Querelle honed in on a massive sound playing as loud as possible in the middle of a forest. With three guitarists each adding their own distinct instrumental voice to the band’s richly textured songs, cuts like “Montreal, Montreal” retain a sonic richness that isn’t studio trickery; it’s the honest, unaffected sound of a group of friends cranking up the decibels and playing as fiercely as they can."
