IBA researchers identify the enzymatic in vivo function of FAHD1

The human mitochondrial protein FAHD1 is a member of the FAH enzyme superfamily. While the FAH family is known to catalyze a multitude of diverse chemical reactions, the enzymatic in vivo function of FAHD1 had not been characterized yet. Using molecular modeling followed by biochemical investigations, we were able to identify FAHD1 as an oxaloacetate decarboxylase, an enzymatic function so far undescribed in mammalian metabolism.
