Research Objectives
The research center „Alpine Infrastructure Engineering“ is part of the research area „Alpine Space – Man and Environment“. Its research focuses especially on the two topic areas „Infrastructure and Environment“ and „Risk and Protection“.
The main objectives of the topic area „Infrastructure and Environment“ are to develop new and innovative methods, procedures and technical solutions for supply and disposal of settlement areas and buildings, water supply and distribution, hydraulic and traffic engineering, energy efficiency as well as mobility, accessibility and transport planning in the outstanding surrounding conditions of Alpine Space.
In the topic „Risk and Protection“ research is focused on mass movement (bed load, avalanches and mudflow), safety precautions, formation and impact of floods, land-slides and mountain creeps.
Questions related to infrastructure and its impacts on environment as well as safety is-sues (natural hazards) are of special interest in Alpine areas due to their effects on society, economy and environment. Infrastructure and safety in an Alpine surrounding are very essential for tourism, too. Accordingly there is a strong public interest on questions, problems and effective solutions.
New knowledge is gained through scientific studies in particular for the interaction of the interfaces between men – nature and technology. The results can be considered in the future when dealing with planning and construction projects.
It is intended to reach the objectives using modern methods on high scientific level. In doing so, synergies within the research center as well as to other centers at the faculty and the research area „Alpine Space – Man and Environment“ of the university are utilised. In particular the integration of activities with the research center „Computational Engineering“ and the doctorate program “Natural Hazards” has to be mentioned.
