Secondary School Teacher Training General Education (2026W)
The teacher training programme trains teachers of general education subjects at secondary schools (secondary schools, general secondary schools, intermediate and higher vocational schools, polytechnic schools, etc.).
It lasts a total of 5 years and is divided into a 3-year Bachelor's programme and a 2-year Master's programme.
The teacher training programme comprises basic subject-specific and subject-didactic training in two subjects or one subject and one specialisation, general educational science and practical pedagogical training.
The two teaching subjects or the teaching subject and the specialisation can be freely chosen by the students from twenty-four teaching subjects and two specialisations1).

The Bachelor's degree programme lasts 6 semesters. The total workload is 180 ECTS credits, with each ECTS credit representing approx. 25 full working hours.
A Bachelor's thesis must be written in each subject/specialisation towards the end of the course.
Graduates are awarded the academic title Bachelor of Education, B.Ed.
Before admission to the teacher training programmeAdmission procedure must be passed.
Proof of physical and motor aptitude must be provided before admission for the subject Physical Education, and proof of artistic aptitude must be provided before admission for the subjects Art and Design, Music and Instrumental Music and Technology and Design.
Graduates of the Bachelor's Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) can be employed on a termination basis as teachers of their subjects at secondary level 1 at Austrian schools. Permanent employment requires completion of the Master's degree programme within eight years.
Graduates of the Master's Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) have acquired the teaching qualification for their teaching subjects and can be employed as teachers at Austrian secondary schools.
Completion of the Master's degree programme also entitles graduates to be admitted to the PhD programme in Education. Graduates of the PhD programme in Education hold positions in research and in the education sector. Thematic specialisations include subject didactics, school pedagogy / educational research, Islamic and Catholic Religious Education or inclusive pedagogy. The qualifications acquired during the teacher training programme also open up career opportunities in other areas. Particularly noteworthy are: social and youth work, development education, adult education, work in the media and communications industry and in the public sector. In several teaching subjects, graduates of a teacher training programme also have access to the professional fields of the corresponding subject study programme, especially if the chosen teaching subjects complement each other in terms of content.
The Master's programme lasts 4 semesters (120 ECTS credits).
A Master's thesis must be written during the Master's programme. The topic of the Master's thesis must be chosen from the subject science of one of the teaching subjects, the subject didactics of one of the teaching subjects, a specialisation or the basics of educational science. It is expressly recommended to choose interdisciplinary topics.
Graduates are awarded the academic title Master of Education, M.Ed.
