The Master’s Degree Programme in Romance Studies consists of three parts:

  • a deepening of language proficiency in one of the three languages offered (French, Italian, Spanish);
  • Romance studies beyond language acquisition, in particular linguistics, literature and culture studies, and
  • an elective module where students may pick courses offered in other Master’s degree programmes.

For the latter, electives at the Faculty of Language, Literature and Culture are of particular interest.

Please note: the language of instruction for this programme is German.

Graduates have highly specialised knowledge in the fields of language, literature and cultural studies. They are able to demonstrate their competence in these fields and at the interface to other philological-cultural-studies-related subjects by scientifically correct formulation and substantiation of arguments and by finding innovative solutions to problems. Because of the relatively extensive elective part, they are able to apply their specialist knowledge in an interdisciplinary way.

In addition to a thorough specialist knowledge, special emphasis is placed on the following key qualifications:

  1. communicative skills (written and oral expressiveness)
  2. mental flexibility and ability to respond positively to criticism (logical thinking and argumentation, fast understanding of complex relationships, developing of creative solution strategies)
  3. intercultural and culture-crossing competence (dealing with different traditions of thought)

The subject-specific skills in detail:

  • Command of language
    Command of a foreign language at level C2 of the CEFR, skills in the fields of text reception and text production, advancing of language skills with stays abroad (e.g. ERASMUS).
  • Linguistics
    Scientific study of the structures of French / Italian / Spanish; creating an awareness of the respective language and the mechanisms of action in various regional, social, situational and historical contexts;
  • Literary studies
    Critical examination of texts of various origin (also film, chanson); creating an awareness for the interdependency of culture and text).
  • Civilisation and cultural studies
    Creating an awareness for the political, social and economic aspects of the Romance language area in their respective historic context.

Precisely because the above-mentioned competences are imparted, graduates enjoy a variety of career opportunities in different fields: international relations, culture, media, public relations, language mediation, tourism, publishing, administration, marketing, economy, science.

Ancient Worlds (Master)

The Master's programme in Ancient Worlds deals with the Mediterranean world and the Near East from the beginnings of writing to late antiquity and offers the opportunity for specialized study in the fields of Ancient History, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Greek Studies, Latin Studies, Classical Archaeology, and Near Eastern Archaeology.

Archae­o­log­i­cal Stud­ies (Master)

Archaeology is the study of the physical evidence of humans and society over time. An objective reconstruction of past realities is based on the investigation and analysis of archaeological records in the form of soil records and artifacts.

In the Master’s degree programme the students may choose a focus in the individual archaeological disciplines.

Edu­ca­tional Sciences (Master)

The goal of the Master’s Degree Programme in Educational Sciences is to deepen the students’ knowledge in the field of education sciences. 

Each student may choose to focus theoretically, methodologically and practically on a specific topic within education sciences, for example general education science, gender studies, psychoanalysis, migration studies, etc.

Euro­pean Eth­nol­ogy (Master)

The students of this Master’s degree programme gain competencies in the cultural analysis of life styles, every day life practices and complex socio-cultural processes.

They also learn to understand the historical dimensions of contemporary phenomena and discourses, to deconstruct popular identity concepts and their instrumentalisation in media and politics and to present academic findings to the broader public.

Gen­der, Cul­ture and So­cial Change (Master)

The interfaculty Master's programme Gender, Culture and Social Change analyses gender as a hierarchising structural category in close connection with the categories of ethnicity and class in post-national and -colonial constellations. Students acquire interdisciplinary academic and career-oriented competences.

Ger­man Philol­ogy (Master)

The students of this Masters’s degree programme acquire in-depth theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of German philology and may focus on specific areas in this field of study. They are able to develop and follow innovative theoretical concepts and research approaches by applying their comprehensive specialised knowledge.
