30-181 Linking the wiki to a course

Overview

The course element Wiki allows you to integrate the learning resource Wiki into a course. Besides the main function of the wiki providing information in a structured way and allowing people to edit the content together, it can also be used to easily work on new information together. You can define in the presettings which user roles have the rights to create, edit and delete articles in the wiki.

Wikis are created as independent learning resources which can then be integrated into your course with the course element Wiki. The learning resource Wiki is created course-independently. Thus, one wiki is employable and editable in many courses at the same time. This HelpCard will show you how you can insert the learning resource wiki into your course with the course element wiki.

Please note: The learning resource Wiki is course-independent (thus one wiki is employable in many courses at the same time) and can be edited outside or inside of any given course. This means that any edits that have been undertaken in any one course will be transferred to all other instances of this wiki!

HelpCard 30-180 shows you how to create a wiki and how to create and edit contents for this wiki. If you subscribe to the wiki (with the button that is toggled on/off besides modifications in the upper right-hand corner in the course view), you will be informed about any changes to the wiki in a timely manner (see HelpCard 20-070).

Important Steps

  1. Open your course via Authoring.
  2. Click onto Administration and then onto Course editor. The course editor opens up.
  3. Choose Insert course elements in the upper left-hand corner and under Communication and collaboration the course element Wiki. The course element has been added to the course structure and can (if necessary) be moved to a different place via Drag&Drop. Alternatively it is possible to add course elements with the Quick-Add function in the yellow-lined menu on top of the course: Insert the name of the course element into the Quick-Add bar and push the Enter button.
  4. Fill in the title shown in the course structure under Title in the tab Title and description and, if desired, fill in the Description. Click onto Insert additional information to add Objectives, instructions or instructions for the coach. In Addition to this, you can Set a link for this course element by clicking onto the blue text and copying the predefined link. Save your changes.
  5. In the tabs Visibility and Access or Learning path you can, if desired, regulate the visibility and the access to the course elements:
    • If your course is a conventional course, you will find more detailed information in HelpCard 10-030.
    • If your course is a learning path course, you will find more detailed information in HelpCard 10-031.
  6. In the tab Layout you can change the layout of course elements. You can add background images to course elements or change the font colour. How to do this you will find in HelpCard 10-033 Layout.
  7. In the tab Wiki learning content click Choose, create or import wiki. A new window opens up.
    • Should you like to insert an already-created wiki, then choose that one from the list. Click Create in the upper right-hand corner to create a new wiki or select Import to upload a wiki from your computer into OpenOlat. The integrated wiki appears and can be edited or exchanged at this place.
  8. In the tab Wiki learning content you can choose which course members can edit the content of the wiki.
  9. Click onto the red X in the upper right-hand corner to close the course editor. To publish these changes, choose the option Yes, automatically (for further information about the publishing of course contents see HelpCard 10-020). The course view has been adjusted to include any changes made.
