The Area of Language Education is based on a former organisational unit that was established by the Chancellor of University of Innsbruck in 2009. This area brings together what used to be several different initiatives in the field of foreign language education. As the Head of this area, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Barbara Hinger is responsible for its administration and coordination.

The area’s cross-linguistic approach makes it unique in Austria. This approach ensures a wide range of innovative synergies and collaborations between education and research concepts regarding first, second and foreign language learning. It also integrates theoretical and applied research into ground-breaking scientific projects and research- and theory-led teaching methods. The team is responsible for language education within all the teacher training programmes at the University of Innsbruck. The team members engage in research in the field of language education on a national and international level, and take part in training seminars for teachers all over Austria and beyond. The fields of research are: multilingualism, multilingual didactics, language acquisition in a guided setting, communicative testing and evaluation, (multimedia) vocabulary acquisition, motivation in foreign language teaching and learning, textbook and classroom analysis, educational aspects of classical language teaching, training for (foreign) language teachers, and literature and media classes. The research is conducted either collaborative or individually and concerns one or more languages.
