40-033 Modified exam modalities

Overview

If individual or several students are entitled to a longer processing time in your exam (modified exam modalities according to §59 Abs. 1 Z 12 UG 2002), you can implement this in your OpenOlat test in three ways:

  • You extend the test time in the assessment tool for the respective students before the start of the test.
  • You extend the test time in the assessment tool for the respective students after the start of the test.
  • You create a copy of the test and make it available to the selected students with the appropriate settings.

Important steps

Variant 1

You extend the test time in the assessment tool for the respective students before starting the test.

Create a test as usual and include it in your course. Note that a test time must be defined. Even before students start the test do the following:

  1. In your course, click Administration and then click Assessment Tool.
  2. Select the test/exam from the list on the left.
  3. Switch to the Participants tab.
  4. On the far right of the table, select the three-dot menu for the respective student or students.
  5. Click on Add disadvantage compensation.
  6. Now fill in: Who approved the disadvantage compensation. On which date the disadvantage compensation was approved. The additional time in minutes.
  7. Click on Prolong.

Variant 2

You extend the test time in the assessment tool after the start of the test for the respective students.

Create a test as usual and include it in your course. Once the test has been started by the students, proceed as follows:

  1. In your course, click Administration and then click Assessment tool.
  2. Select the test/exam from the list on the left.
  3. Switch to the Participants tab.
  4. Place a check mark to the left of the student's name whose test time you want to extend and click on the Prolong button. A new window will open.
  5. Indicate in minutes how much you would like to prolong the test and click Prolong.

Please note: This option is only available if you have specified a time limit in the test itself or in the course element. For more information, see HelpCard 40-041.

Variant 3

For this variant you need a second exam group in OpenOlat, which contains ONLY the students who get a longer processing time. How to create a group in OpenOlat can be found in the HelpCard 20-010.

If necessary, remove these students from the actual exam group as well.

Then proceed as follows:

  1. Open the course in which the exam will take place.
  2. Click Administration in the upper left corner and then Course editor.
  3. Add a course element Test and name it Modified Exam.
  4. Click the Test configuration tab and select the exact same test as in the original exam.
  5. Also, in the Test configuration tab, under Set assessment period, adjust the time accordingly.
  6. Click the Options tab and select Adjust configuration.
  7. Adjust the Time limit.

In your course there should now be two course elements in which the same test is included. An original test and a modified test, with the test times adjusted in the second.

Note for visually impaired students

If appropriate, the exam can be sent as a Word document to students who rely on a screen reader. Please discuss details with the University's Office of Disability Services.
