FAQ
Because it is a field society needs and one that is personally enriching. You will gain advanced knowledge in Islamic theology while developing the critical and innovative skills needed for an academically rigorous engagement with faith and religion in the public sphere. You will learn to analyse theological and religious‑education questions, to interpret Islam as religion, tradition and culture in its specific contexts, and to address socio‑political issues confidently within communities and educational settings. The programme also promotes interdisciplinary, intercultural and interfaith work, and fosters awareness of gender issues. These are ideal prerequisites for taking on positions of responsibility in schools, Muslim communities and the wider public sphere.
The programme is broad-based and combines specialised Islamic theological study with the practical dimensions of religious education and teaching methodology. Key areas of study include:
- Islamic theology; Qur’anic and Hadith studies (including classical exegesis/tafsīr and Hadith hermeneutics)
- Arabic and Qur’anic recitation (tajwīd)
- Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh)
- The Prophet’s biography (sīra); Islamic philosophy, anthropology and ethics (akhlāq)
- The history of Islam, Islamic art and cultural history
- Religious diversity; Islamic mysticism (taṣawwuf) and rational theology (kalām)
- Islamic pastoral care in the European context (including hospital, prison and military chaplaincy)
- Religious education, developmental psychology and primary pedagogy
- Subject-specific pedagogy/didactics and school placements at primary and lower-secondary level
The programme is complemented by modules on spiritual and aesthetic education; competencies for engaging with pluralism, conflict and crisis; Christianity and co-operative religious education; and interdisciplinary options with a required focus on women’s and gender studies.
With a Bachelor of Arts (BA), you will be qualified for roles that require a scholarly understanding and application of theories, methods and tools in Islamic religious education. You will take responsibility for the education and professional development of individuals and groups, and you will be able to work in schools, community settings, extracurricular education, pastoral care/chaplaincy (e.g. in hospitals, prisons or the armed forces), and in interfaith and intercultural dialogue. The pedagogical, didactic and subject‑specific practical skills you acquire—sharpened through multiple school placements—will prepare you specifically for teaching roles in Islamic religious education.
