Requirements

Relevant bachelor's degrees at the University of Innsbruck:

• Bachelor's Programme Health and Competitive Sports

Proof of general university entrance qualification:

The general university entrance qualification for admission to a master's programme must be proven by the completion of a subject-related bachelor's programme, another subject-related programme of at least the same higher education level at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution, or a program defined in the curriculum of the master's programme. To compensate for significant differences in subject matter, supplementary examinations (maximum 30 ECTS credits) may be prescribed, which must be taken by the end of the second semester of the master's programme.

The rectorate may determine which of these supplementary examinations are prerequisites for taking examinations provided for in the curriculum of the master's programme.

In the course of the proof of the general university entrance qualification, the completion of the following core areas within the framework of the completed bachelor's degree programme shall be examined in any case:

• 10 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Medical Principles
• 15 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Sports Education and Sports Psychology
• 30 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Kinesiology and Training Sciences
• 20 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Prevention and Rehabilitation
•   5 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Statistics, Empirical Methods
• 25 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Theory Based Training (including Alpine Sports)

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 4 semesters or 120 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

Graduates of the Master’s Programme Sports Science are able to convey a comprehensive high-quality demand-oriented and targeted sports and movement offer. They are able to carry out scientific work independently and to implement research projects in different fields of health, popular and competitive sports.

Graduates have in-depth and advanced sport-scientific qualifications which enable them to hold sport-related management positions with wide-ranging planning and decision functions. Problem-solving strategies in new challenges and the elaboration of appropriate concepts and their successful realization are conveyed.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates possess well-founded knowledge to supervise training processes for different target groups and objectives. They are experts in analysing movement with the competence of supporting learning processes and technological developments. The programme conveys in-depth knowledge of the methods of empirical research and sportscientific measurement methods, and it qualifies students for critical evaluations. The study programme offers the possibility to acquire special scientific competences.

Graduates possess communicative skills to implement individual, group-related and organizational measures in sports or to counsel organisations and business companies in terms of sport- and movement-related issues.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

Graduates are qualified for supervising research projects in all areas of sport science. Combined with the successful completion of the Bachelor’s Programme in Sport Science at the University of Innsbruck and within the framework of the medical assistant professions law (MABG, BGBl. I No 89/2012, 3rd section), they possess defined qualifications the field „training therapy“.

Supplementary Programme
