Abstract: La situación lingüística del actual Uruguay: historia social de la lenguas y caracterización de las variedades dialectales empleadas allí Me propongo realizar un panorama de la historia social de las lenguas que se han hablado en el actual Uruguay para poder explicar, a partir de este, la dominancia absoluta del español en la actualidad. Luego describiré las grandes áreas dialectales del Uruguay, para centrarme en algunos rasgos caracterizadores del español en el Uruguay en el plano fónico, morfológico y sintáctico, rasgos que lo inscriben en el español rioplatense. Finalmente, presentaré con detalle el complejo sistema de formas de tratamiento, sistema que constituye una de sus características más distintivas del español en el
Uruguay.
The Linguistic Situation in Present-Day Uruguay: Social History of Languages and Characterization of Dialectal Varieties I propose to provide an overview of the social history of the languages that have been spoken in present-day Uruguay in order to explain, on this basis, the absolute dominance of Spanish today. I will then describe the major dialectal areas of Uruguay, focusing on some of the characteristic features of Spanish in Uruguay at the phonetic, morphological and syntactic levels, features that place it within the Rioplatense Spanish variety. Finally, I will present in detail the complex system of forms of address, a system that constitutes one of the most distinctive characteristics of Spanish in Uruguay.
