Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)
Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) starting winter semester 2019 »
(1) The following exams have to be taken during the studies induction and orientation phase, which takes place in the first semester:
- School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
- Linear Algebra, VO 4, 6 ECTS-Credits
(2) Before the full completion of the introductory study and orientation phase, students can participate in courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits.
Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) until summer semester 2019 »
(1) Within the scope of the Studies and Orientation Period, which takes place in the first semester, the following course examination must be passed:
- School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
(2) Successful passing of the Studies Induction and Orientation Period entitles to passing all further courses and examinations and to writing the Bachelor’s Thesis.
(3) Before successful completion of the Studies Induction and Orientation Period courses amounting to 22 ECTS-Credits may be passed. The registration requirements listed in the curriculum must be adhered to.
Recommended Course Sequence
The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.
The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).
The bridge course mathematics is recommended to first year students in the Bachelor's programmes Technical Mathematics and School Teacher Training Mathematics. The bridge course offers support for first year students to ease the transition from school to university.

Qualification Profile and Skills
The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specializations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools, Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). This study programme also meets the requirements for teaching in intermediate and higher schools in the South Tyrol *. It consists of a Bachelor’s Programme and a subsequent Master’s Programme. It covers training in general education science, a pedagogical-practical training and a subject-specific and subject-didactic education in the two selected teaching subjects.
Graduates of the Bachelor’s Secondary School Teacher Training Programme in the subject are thanks to their mathematical training among other things able
- to explain the part of mathematics which is taught in secondary schools in a simple and comprehensible manner and to motivate learners.
- to mathematically model problems from a variety of application areas.
- to use suitable technical aids and to implement in particular some algorithms.
- to make best use of learning technologies for their teaching.
- to outline and present mathematical issues exactly as well as to interpret mathematical tasks and their solutions.
- to critically question mathematical statements and argumentations.
- to formulate assumptions and to use or develop solution strategies.
- to evaluate and select teaching materials and thematic approaches as well as prepare teaching materials in consideration of the age of the learners and the target group.
- to awaken the pupils’ interest in mathematics and its fields of application.
- to observe, analyse and interpret mathematical learning processes and to develop suitable support measures.
- to select, test and evaluate teaching methods based on the results of didactic research.

Expected Learning Outcomes
The graduates have a sound knowledge in the fields of mathematics relevant for teaching at secondary schools, in didactics for teaching mathematics and in school pedagogy. They are able to write and argument in these fields and in the interfaces to school practice in a scientifically correct way and to find innovative solutions to problems. They are able to support personal development processes, to accompany mathematical learning processes and the evaluate the learning outcomes.
Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) are admitted to the corresponding Master’s Programme and can be provisionally start their teaching service in the chosen general education subjects in secondary schools to complete the Induction and Orientation Phases.
With the qualifications acquired during the Bachelor’s Programme further job opportunities, such as social and youth work or adult education, open up.Postgraduate and further Studiy at the University of Innsbruck
