Die Arbeitsgruppe befasst sich mit Fragen aus den Forschungsbereichen Bodenkunde und Landschaftsökologie. Die Untersuchungen finden vor allem in den Alpen statt, aber auch im Alpenvorland, in urbanen Räumen, in den Karpaten, auf Grönland und in Bolivien. Einige der Themen beinhalten angewandte Aspekte. Zudem bestehen Kooperationen mit KollegInnen der Fachbereiche Entwicklungsforschung, Raumplanung, Geschichtswissenschaft, Archäologie, Mineralogie, Geologie, Geotechnik, Ökologie, Botanik, Mikrobiologie und Bodenzoologie.
