Abstract

This PhD project at the Department of Microbiology, University of Innsbruck, and the Josef Ressel Centre (JRC), MCI Innsbruck, focuses on bio-based gasification char (BGC) and activated carbon (AC) in wastewater treatment processes and is funded by a four-year dissertation scholarship from the Christian Doppler Research Association. The project aims to develop measurement methods for BGC and AC in various matrices, evaluate how adding BGC and AC affects the microbial community in anaerobic digesters for biogas production, and explore real-world applications for BGC and AC. In addition, the project will investigate the adsorption of pharmaceutically active compounds onto BGC and AC and assess whether this adsorption reduces or eliminates inhibitory effects on key microbial populations and overall digester performance, including impacts on community structure, microbial activity, and biogas yields.
