Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) starting winter semester 2019 »

(1) The following exams have to be taken during the studies induction and orientation phase, which takes place in the first semester:

  1. School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
  2. Introduction to Music Pedagogy, SL 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
  3. Introduction to Scientific Working, SL 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
  4. Music History 1, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits

(2) Before the full completion of the introductory study and orientation phase, students can participate in courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits.

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) until summer semester 2019 »

(1) Within the scope of the Studies and Orientation Period, which takes place in the first semester, the following course examination must be passed:

  1. School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits

(2) Successful passing of the Studies Induction and Orientation Period entitles to passing all further courses and examinations and to writing the Bachelor’s Thesis.

(3)  Before successful completion of the Studies Induction and Orientation Period courses amounting to 22 ECTS-Credits may be passed. The registration requirements listed in the curriculum must be adhered to.

General Information

Recommended Coruse Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specializations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools,  Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). This study programme also meets the requirements for teaching in intermediate and higher schools in the South Tyrol *. It consists of a Bachelor’s Programme and a subsequent Master’s Programme. It covers training in general education science, a pedagogical-practical training and a subject-specific and subject-didactic education in the two selected teaching subjects.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) in the subject of Music Education can

  • plan their music education lessons according to the curriculum and the situation by performing their own music, moving to music and engaging with historical and systematic aspects of music.
  • express themselves artistically in many ways.
  • outline the many uses of music (as soloists and in an ensemble), use it for their classes and instruct others to express themselves in music.
  • understand music as sound phenomenon and medium of expression anchored in a historic and socio-cultural context that is subject to certain principles
  • make use of different approaches in reception and production of different forms of music, their structures, principles of organisation and inherent laws under supervision.
  • reflect on music-cultural developments, actively design them and to inspire a critical awareness for different forms of musical expression and their different social functions.
  • work on scientific questions relating to instrumental/vocal pedagogy/vocal didactics and other music-related disciplines with appropriate research methods under supervision.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates have access to a wide range of basic artistic, perceptual and design skills relevant to music teaching in secondary schools, as well as relevant musicological, theoretical and analytical knowledge. A sound knowledge in music didactics and school pedagogy puts them in a position to design motivational learning environments in consideration of the target group and the individual musical abilities and interests of the learners and to investigate questions in music pedagogy and didactics resp. according to scientific criteria.
