The Master’s programme in Sociology focuses on the academically grounded analysis of contemporary social developments and on integrating theory, empirical research and practice. The four areas of specialisation — social and environmental transformations; work, care and gender; theory, knowledge and culture; and the sociology of law and crime — enable students to tailor their studies to their interests and equip them with the specialist skills needed to analyse complex social processes and address societal challenges.

On the Master’s programme in Sociology, you will learn to analyse social developments in depth and to play an active role in shaping them. The programme combines theory, empirical social research and practical experience, offers interdisciplinary options, and provides a wide range of opportunities for work placements and study abroad. You will strengthen your analytical, methodological and communication skills, and develop critical, creative and responsible thinking – the ideal foundation for a diverse range of career paths in a changing society!
A broad-based compulsory module provides in-depth knowledge of the philosophy of the social sciences, sociological theory and current debates, as well as qualitative and quantitative social research. Opportunities for individual specialisation and the integration of theory, empirical research and practice are available, in particular, in the following four areas:
- social and environmental transformations
- work, care and gender
- theory, knowledge and culture
- sociology of law and criminology
The Master’s degree qualifies graduates for roles in academia, research, and a wide range of non-academic sectors. Potential career fields include, among others, public administration, political consultancy, development cooperation and NGOs, international organisations, the private sector, journalism, the media and new information technologies, events and cultural management, interest groups, and social, cultural and educational institutions.
