Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) starting winter semester 2019 »

(1) The following exams have to be taken during the studies induction and orientation phase, which takes place in the first semester:

  1. School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
  2. Experimental Lecture General Chemistry, VO 5, 6 ECTS-Credits

(2) Before the full completion of the introductory study and orientation phase, students can participate in courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits.

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) until summer semester 2019 »

(1) Within the scope of the Studies and Orientation Period, which takes place in the first semester, the following course examination must be passed:

  1. School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits

(2) Successful passing of the Studies Induction and Orientation Period entitles to passing all further courses and examinations and to writing the Bachelor’s Thesis.

(3)  Before successful completion of the Studies Induction and Orientation Period courses amounting to 22 ECTS-Credits may be passed. The registration requirements listed in the curriculum must be adhered to.

General Information

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specializations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools,  Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). This study programme also meets the requirements for teaching in intermediate and higher schools in the South Tyrol *. It consists of a Bachelor’s Programme and a subsequent Master’s Programme. It covers training in general education science, a pedagogical-practical training and a subject-specific and subject-didactic education in the two selected teaching subjects.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Secondary School Teacher Training Programme for the subject of Chemistry have acquired the following subject-specific and didactic skills:

  • A theoretically and methodologically sound expert knowledge founded on laboratory practice in Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry.
  • Experimental skills, mastering of chemical working techniques and practice in handling chemical substances to responsibly handle chemicals in the classroom.
  • The ability to independently think in a scientific way, to conduct experiments independently and to document and present the results of experiments in a scientific way.
  • The ability to derive general laws of chemistry through own observation of experiments, then to use them to explain observations of everyday life.
  • An awareness for sustainable development and use of material and energy resources.
  • The ability to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of the technical use of chemical products, as well as to assess their risks to humans and the environment and to raise awareness  for this among pupils.
  • Knowledge of didactic theories and models and how to use them effectively for teaching and learning in class.
  • The ability to select, test, evaluate teaching methods and media based on findings in current didactic research as well as gender competence based on gender theory, and to use them for the realization of professional use.
  • The ability to create teaching materials adapted to the needs of the pupils and to select suitable experiments to arouse interest in chemistry in the pupils, as well as to make them aware of the close links to biology, physics, medicine, pharmacy and ecology .

The ability to independently acquire knowledge with regard to the subject and the fields didactics.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates have in-depth knowledge in the fields of chemistry, didactics for teaching chemistry and school pedagogy relevant for teaching chemistry at secondary schools. They are able to formulate and argue in these areas and their interfaces to school practice in a scientifically correct way, as well as to solve problems in an innovative way. They are able to support personal development processes, to accompany learning processes in chemistry and to assess the learning outcomes.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) are admitted to the corresponding Master’s Programme and can be provisionally start their teaching service in the chosen general education subjects in secondary schools to complete the Induction and Orientation Phases.

With the qualifications acquired during the Bachelor’s Programme further job opportunities, such as social and youth work or adult education, open up.
