Requirements
Relevant bachelor's degrees at the University of Innsbruck:
- Bachelor's Programme Classica et Orientalia (2009W)
- Bachelor's Programme Classica et Orientalia (2015W)
Criteria for the determination of equivalence:
Admission to the master's degree programme may also be possible if a student has completed a bachelor's degree in a relevant related field. As part of the determination of equivalence, the following core areas of the completed bachelor's degree programme will be assessed:
- 10.0 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Latin
- 15.0 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Ancient Literature
- 7.5 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Cultural History of Antiquity
- 7.5 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Principles and Methods about Classical Philosophy
In the event that equivalence has been established in principle but with certain qualifications missing for full equivalence, supplemental examinations may be required. These examinations must be completed during the master degree programme.
Recommended Course Sequence
The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.
The standard duration of the study programme is 4 semesters or 120 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills
The Master’s Programme in Classical Philology – Latin aims at the scientific examination of the Latin language and literature of antiquity, the Middle Ages and modern times. With their development and functions as well as the cultural, historic and social processes they are embedded in, they are understood as important components of European cultural and intellectual history.
Graduates are able to work on subject-specific topics independently, data-based, theory-based and in a methodological reflected way and to present contents in the resp. requested form and to the requested extent with regards to the target group.
The Master’s Programme in Classical Philology – Latin is science-orientated.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Graduates have a highly specialised knowledge of the subject of Latin. They are able to demonstrate their competence by formulating and arguing in a scientifically correct way and by finding innovative solutions to problems and by communicating beyond the boundaries of their subject.
Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Master’s Programme Classical Philology – Latin are qualified for a wide range of activities. They can use their expertise in their field of work or study as well as their knowledge from other disciplines for the strategic direction and guidance of complex projects, operational areas or companies. Depending on the focus of their studies they are qualified for working in the following professional fields:
- research and teaching at universities as well as in non-university research institutes and projects,
- work at language schools and in adult education,
- libraries and archives,
- publishing, in particular in scientific and school book publishing houses,
- tourism, in particular as guides,
- cultural administration and education,
- work in museums,
- cultural journalism,
- cultural and educational politics as well as public relations.
