Examination Regulations

Description of the applied grading system (including the grade distribution table) »

The grade distribution table is a statistical representation of the distribution of all successfully completed examinations in a given programme of study or subject (based on all registered students for the programme or subject). The grade distribution table is updated in regular intervals.

Criteria for the determination of equalence:

Admission to the master's degree programme may also be possible if a student has completed a bachelor's degree in a relevant related field. As part of the determination of equivalence, the following core areas of the completed bachelor's degree programme will be assessed:

  • 25 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Mathematics, Geometry and Informatics
  • 15 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Mechanics
  • 22 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Strength of Materials and Structural Analysis
  • 22 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Concrete and Masonry Construction, Structural Steelwork and Wood
                                                 Building Design and Construction
  • 15 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Geotechnical Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering
  • 20 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Building Construction and Building Physics and Building Materials
  • 10 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Environmental Engineering and Transport
  • 12 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Construction Engineering and Economics
  •   5 ECTS-Credits Core Area: Surveying

In the event that equivalence has been established in principle but with certain qualifications missing for full equivalence, supplemental examinations may be required. These examinations must be completed during the master degree programme.

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 4 semesters or 120 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

The field of civil engineering ranges from feasibility studies, planning, structural design and calculations for construction and operations to the preservation and renovation of structures. Graduates of the Master’s Programme in Civil Engineering possess the necessary knowledge and skills to develop and implement methodologically sound solutions for technical tasks in the areas of concrete and brick construction, wood construction, metal construction, composite construction and materials technology. The programme is based on in-depth knowledge of the fundamental subjects of mechanics, strength of materials and numerical analysis. Moreover, graduates possess advanced knowledge of construction operations and the processes of project management and development.

Expected Learning Outcomes

They are able to correctly apply their highly specialized knowledge, incorporating the latest findings in various areas of civil engineering, as the basis for innovative solutions and discourse with colleagues. Graduates possess the necessary competence and critical awareness to perform demanding tasks in civil engineering projects.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

Graduates of the civil engineering programme are capable of working in planning, building and operations in companies of various sizes and in capacities involving planning, projection, analysis, advising and implementation. They can also pursue professional activities in construction companies, public agencies and organizations, interest groups, media and in teaching and research institutions.
