Examination regulations

The grade distribution table is a statistical representation of the distribution of all successfully completed examinations in a given programme of study or subject (based on all registered students for the programme or subject). The grade distribution table is updated in regular intervals.

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) starting winter term 2016 »

(1) Within the scope of the Studies and Orientation Stage, which takes place in the first semester, the following course examinations must be passed:

  1. SL Introduction to General Literary Studies (CM 1 lit. a/1 h/2.5 ECTS-Credits),
  2. SL Introduction to Comparative Literary Studies (CM 1 lit. b/1 h/2.5 ECTS-Credits),
  3. VO Positions in Literary Studies (CM 2/2 h/5 ECTS-Credits).

(2) Successful passing of all exams of the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage entitles to passing all further courses and examinations and to writing the Bachelor’s Theses.

(3) Before successful completion of the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage courses amounting to 20 ECTS-Credits may be passed. The registration requirements listed in the curriculum must be met.

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP) until december 2015 »

(1) The Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP), with a duration of one semester (30 ECTS-Credits), provides an overview of the study programme and its structure in order to give students an objective basis to assess their decision to pursue their chosen subjects.

(2) During the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage, the following course examinations, which may be repeated twice, must be completed satisfactorily:

  1. SL Introduction to General Literature (PM 1 lit. a./1 hour/2.5 ECTS-Credits) 
  2. SL Introduction to Comparative Literature (PM 1 lit. b./1 hour/2.5 ECTS-Credits)

(3) A positive result (passing grade) on the examinations specified in Paragraph 2 permits students to attend all courses and take all examinations following the Introduction and Orientation Phase for Students (STEOP) and to write a bachelor's thesis as described in the curriculum. The registration requirements specified by the curriculum must be met.

General Information

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

By closely linking theoretical knowledge with practical tasks, students are encouraged to examine the acquired scientific-theoretical knowledge and competences in specific fields of work.

Subject-specific knowledge and competences: philological-cultural, literary and linguistic basics; text and media analysis; world literature and intertextuality; literature and culture theory; intermediality and interculturality; knowledge of cultural history; practical literary studies; advanced foreign language skills.  

Key qualifications and soft skills: competence in the field of reception and interpretation of scientific and literary texts, also of films and other artworks; competence in writing scientific and other texts; faculty of abstraction and thinking in comprehensive contexts; intercultural competence (ability to impart one’s own culture and to promote the understanding of other cultures), based on advanced foreign language skills; awareness of problems for socially marginalised and disadvantaged areas; competence to realize and critically reflect gender-specific differences; teamwork, in particular for interdisciplinary work; communicative abilities, basic mediation competence; ability to correctly use foreign language skills acquired; general knowledge in the cultural and humanistic field. 

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates are able to elaborate, evaluate and implement scientific developments in the fields mentioned in the qualification profile and competences and to apply them in interdisciplinary contexts. They possess scientifically well-founded theoretical and methodical problem-solving skills, key qualifications and soft skills.

Fields of activities are to be found in international cultural and educational exchange (e.g. foreign lectorates, cultural activities in foreign representations, EU and UNO institutions); publishing – media  (editorial work; publishing activities; print media sector, especially journals; but also radio, television and new media or public relations; art and cultural journalism); activities in archives and (special)libraries; education policy (advisory functions in politics and economy; adult education; librarianship); cultural policy, administration and mediation (project management in museums and exhibitions); advisory functions for management and (cultural) policy; organizational and administrative tasks in public and private institutions, organisations and enterprises etc.
