- Choice of tree species affects urban air quality
A research team from the University of Innsbruck and Jinan University investigated how heat and tree emissions, together with nitrogen oxides, intensify the formation of ground-level ozone in megacities, such as Beijing — with a clear result: tree species make the difference.
20.08.2026 - Why the 2011 Tsunami in Japan was so intense
According to a study published in the journal Science, researchers can now explain why the earthquake off the Japanese coast in 2011 triggered an exceptionally strong tsunami. The cause likely lies in a special structure of the sediment deposits in that region. This conclusion is based on analyses of drill cores from the Japan Trench collected during Expedition 405 as part of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). Charlotte Pizer from the Department of Geology at the University of Innsbruck was involved.

We introduce ourselves
Our faculty comprises 36 professors and lecturers, 27 research assistants (such as guest professors, senior lecturers, senior scientists and university assistants), 72 project staff, 30 student assistants and over 20 colleagues in administration and laboratories.
In the winter semester of 2024/25, approximately 1,600 people studied at our faculty. 434 started their studies in the winter, approximately 700 students are enrolled in a bachelor's program, approximately 400 in a master's program, and 90 people are working on their dissertations.
