Frequently asked questions

No. We are fortunate not to be part of the ‘mass studies’ and have sufficient capacity for you. As long as you meet the formal requirements for admission, you will be offered a place at the university.

Bachelor's degree: You must have completed your Matura (or an equivalent qualification such as the Abitur). Depending on which school you attended, you may also need to take an additional examination in biology and environmental studies. Details on admission can be found here. You can also contact the Admissions Office directly with any questions you may have.

Master's programme: In principle, you can begin the Master's programme with any relevant Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Geophysics or similar. If you are unsure whether your bachelor's degree will be accepted as equivalent, or if you would like to know whether you may need to retake certain courses, please contact the programme coordinator, Prof. Jasper Moernaut. The actual admission and enrolment is handled by the Admissions Office.

In principle, the same enrolment deadlines apply to all programmes at the University of Innsbruck. The dates and deadlines for the current academic year can be found here.

Yes, this is possible in principle. However, it is not recommended, as most courses are only offered on an annual basis. In order to be admitted to some modules, certain courses must already have been completed, which may lead to difficulties in some circumstances.

That will be difficult. Both the bachelor's and master's programmes have a strong practical component. Most modules include internships, exercises or excursions where your attendance is mandatory.

The first point of contact is the Student Services Office at the University of Innsbruck.

If you have specific questions or would like insider information about studying, you can also contact the student council:

A buddy mentoring system is now also available for the Bachelor's programme in Earth Sciences, which is primarily intended to make it easier for you to start your studies. The buddies are experienced students who have already successfully completed the first stage of their studies and are happy to share their own experiences and provide numerous helpful tips on the Bachelor's programme in Earth Sciences.

That depends on what type of school you attended. If you attended at least four hours of science, biology or biology in combination with other subjects per week after the 8th grade, this requirement does not apply to you. If you are still unsure, ask the admission department.

The supplementary examination in biology and environmental studies can be taken at the Provincial School Board. The contact person for the current examination dates is Prof. Kurt Benkovic at the Abendgymnasium Innsbruck.

The student representative will be happy to send you an overview of the examination material on request.

The recommended textbook is ‘Linder Biologie 1, LP 2004 ISBN 3-7055-0648-X’.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jasper Moernaut(Institute of Geology, Bruno Sander House, 3rd floor, room 6O311) is responsible for the crediting of examinations.
