About us

In order to establish contemporary history as an independent subject in research and teaching, the Department of Contemporary History was established at the University of Innsbruck in 1984, after a chair for contemporary history had been filled by o. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rolf Steininger a year before.
Since then, the department has been performing work at the highest level:

Last but not least, the department was evaluated by a commission of the European Science Foundation and classified as a Center of Excellence. On the occasion of the department's anniversary in 2024, we looked back.
