About

Research Objectives

Theory of knowledge and theory-guided research are central elements for all academic disciplines, but in particular, the social sciences and the humanities cultivate the engagement with theory as an independent field of study. Social sciences and the humanities work with multiple paradigms and a broad canon of theoretical literature that is continuously taught, used, expanded and discussed. The Social Theory Research Center at the University of Innsbruck looks at the field of sociological theories from the perspective of historical epistemology and the history of ideas, theory of knowledge and social and political philosophy. It promotes the exchange between theoretical schools and approaches. Researchers participating in the Social Theory Center engage in an interdisciplinary conversation about the relevance, interpretation and concrete effects of sociological, historical, economic and political analysis on the problems and challenges of contemporary society (ex. social inequality and conflicts, financial crisis, migration, climate change, religious fundamentalism, populism).
