Research information database - FLD
The “Forschungsleistungsdokumentation” (FLD) is the research information system (FIS/CRIS) of the University of Innsbruck. It includes research-relevant achievements such as publications and lectures, but also many other forms of research contributions by academic staff (e.g. research-related contributions in social or other electronic media, audiovisual media contributions, research data, etc.). The FLD data is also supplemented with research-relevant information from other internal databases (e.g. project database, patent database).
By integrating the FLD data into a university portal or into the homepages of the institutes, research and its results are made accessible to a broader public.
The core tasks of the Office for Research Information and Intellectual Capital Reporting include database maintenance and quality assurance for the services recorded in the FLD. The database forms the basis for the reporting system required by the Austrian Universities Act UG 2002. Various key figures and reports are created from the data, which are used both internally (e.g. evaluations, target agreements, development agreement) and externally (e.g. intellectual capital statement).
To be able to enter data into the FLD, you need your own access authorization. We offer training courses for correct data entry via the internal training programme.
News from the FLD
In order to better reflect the growing importance of services in the area of the ‘third mission’, i.e. the transfer of knowledge from research to society, two new service types have been integrated into the FLD as a first step:
The type ‘media contribution’ now combines the previous FLD types ‘contribution in newspaper’, ‘contribution in (web) radio broadcast’ and ‘contribution in television/video platform’. The new type covers all types of media contributions that are based on a specific achievement related to the research activities of the person(s) concerned at the University of Innsbruck. This includes, in particular, self-written newspaper articles and blog posts, interviews and excerpts from such, press releases, clips on video/web portals, radio and television reports, podcasts, articles on news portals, etc. The underlying personal contribution may take the form of authorship, an interview, scientific advice or other participation, for example, and should be specified in the title of the contribution (in brackets) where possible.
In the case of multiple media contributions attributable to a press release (e.g. APA), only the press release is recorded in the FLD. Reports about a person or their research without direct contribution from the person portrayed are not recorded in the FLD.
The newly introduced type ‘other transfer-oriented activity’ can be used to record activities in the field of knowledge transfer that are directly related to the researcher's own research activities at the University of Innsbruck, provided they are not covered by other FLD activity types.
Lectures given as part of lecture series at the University of Innsbruck cannot be included in the FLD.
Guest lectures are individual academic lectures given at external scientific or academic institutions. Lectures given at one's own university do not meet this requirement. Furthermore, lecture series are part of university teaching. Teaching services (with the exception of supervising theses) are generally not included in the FLD. Following internal consultation, the in question were therefore deleted from the FLD across the board.
The following types of achievements were discontinued as of 2025 (achievements already recorded remain visible in the FLD):
- Journal Article (Meeting-Abstract)
- Proceedings Article (Abstract)
- Research Report (Commissioned Research)
- Lecture at Appointment Procedure
- Proposed Candidate in Appointment Procedure
- Journal Article (Correction: Self-Correction)
FLD types ‘Journal Article (Meeting-Abstract)’ and ‘Proceedings Article (Abstract)’ are based on contributions to scientific events (lectures, posters, etc.) that are already represented in the FLD. Proceedings artices that exceed the scope of a pure abstract (extended abstracts, full papers) can be included in future under the types ‘Proceedings Article’ or ‘Journal Article (Proceedings Paper)’.
Commissioned research reports are in most cases not publicly accessible and therefore cannot be validated. Contract research projects are recorded in the project database and automatically imported into the FLD, which means that achievements in this area remain documented. Publicly accessible research reports (with links) can be recorded as ‘Electronic Publications’ in the FLD.
The types ‘Lecture at appointment procedure’ and ‘List position on an appointment proposal / appointment’ will no longer be continued. Achievements of these types are not research-related achievements in the narrower sense. They are based on individual decisions regarding personal career development. Publication may be problematic in terms of data protection law. Furthermore, reliable validation of these achievements is usually not possible. In the case of evaluations, corresponding achievements can be recorded in the self-report.
The type ‘Journal article (Correction: self-correction)’ will be discontinued without replacement.
The deadline for recording research achievements for the year 2025 in the FLD is 16 January 2026. In particular, achievements relevant to the Wissensbilanz (intellectual capital report) must be entered by this date so that they can be evaluated for the Wissensbilanz 2025. Thank you for your support.
Ongoing changes to the FLD require ongoing updates to our manual. The current version of the FLD manual, including definitions of all types of achievements, can be found here.

Research information database
In the publicly accessible internet portal of the FLD you can inform yourself about the broad spectrum of research activities (limited to publications and lectures) of the University of Innsbruck.
VIS:online "My research"
In "My Research", all data stored in the Research information database and in the project database of the University of Innsbruck are available for the individual scientist(s). With the help of the application, all members of the University of Innsbruck for whom data has been recorded in the Research information database or the project database can access, filter and export their data in various formats.
