Research project on the Federal Institution for Children in Need of Education Wiener Neudorf (from 2020)

The history of residential care and youth welfare in Austria has been analysed since 2010. So far, however, there has been no critical reappraisal of the history of the Federal Institution for Children in Need of Education in Wiener Neudorf, which existed from 1951-1974. Over 1100 girls and young women were committed to the Federal Institution by court order during this period and spent part of their youth there: In most cases, the stay lasted at least a year and a half, but often longer.

Were you a girl or young woman in the Federal Centre for Children in Need of Education in Wiener Neudorf and would you like to share your memories with me? Do you still have documents from that time, e.g. letters, photos, diaries, etc.?

A research project started in 2020 looks at the history of the Federal Centre for Children in Need of Education in Wiener Neudorf. What experiences did the girls and young women have during their placement and what influence did their stay in Wiener Neudorf have on their future lives? If you are willing to talk about your memories and experiences in an interview or if you would like to provide documents for the project, please get in touch. You are also welcome to contact contemporary witnesses who, for example, worked at the Wiener Neudorf Federal Institution or who have relatives who spent part of their youth there.

The thesis of the end of institutional and welfare education in the 1970s in German-speaking countries is only true to a very limited extent. This is also confirmed by preliminary studies for this project. In the 1970s and 1980s, institutional education developed differently in the various welfare regions of Austria, Germany and Switzerland in terms of dynamics, degrees and speeds. In the wake of 1968, the system of closed residential care was criticised everywhere and more or less radical reform initiatives were launched. However, quite a few children and young people remained in care institutions for at least another two decades with hardly any changes. This threshold period between change and persistence has so far received little academic attention. The project now aims to close this research gap.

What dynamics can be identified in the welfare regions analysed and what reciprocal effects do these generate locally, regionally, nationally and transnationally? Which structural and institutional legacies, which fields of discourse and actor constellations determine the degree and speed of transformation?

The aim of the cross-border three-country project is to provide an appropriate and differentiated description of a hitherto little-researched threshold period, which will yield new insights into the recent history of the home and provide methodologies for researching welfare state transformations.

Children of occupying soldiers. Memories of a special childhood (2018-2021)

In recent years, media reports, publications and various events have highlighted the special life stories of people whose fathers were members of the Allied forces during the occupation of Austria (1945-1955) - the so-called children of the occupation. Nevertheless, their biographies and life situations in Tyrol have not yet been sufficiently researched or anchored in the collective historical memory. It can be assumed that many children of the occupation were affected by multiple individual and structural discrimination: As children of unmarried mothers, they were under the guardianship and control of the youth welfare office, and as "children of the enemy" they were at risk of stigmatisation and exclusion. With the research project "Occupied children in Tyrol. Individual life organisation and intergenerational processing of a special origin" aims to make a contribution to closing this gap to some extent.
