Interaction between the Circadian Clock and Hypoxic Signaling

Our research focusses on the mutual interaction between the circadian clock and hypoxic signaling of cells. Decreased oxygen availability dampens the circadian clock at the physiological as well as at the molecular level and shifts the oscillation phase in mammals. The hypoxic response of cells and animals, in turn, depends on the time of day and is therefore tightly regulated by the circadian clock. The mechanisms underlying this intertwinement are currently explored by our group to enhance the understanding of pathophysiological conditions in which ischemia plays a role.
