Multilingualism in football
Mehrsprachigkeit im Fußball
English Abstract
This is the continuation of the Master’s Thesis from 2009 on the topic “Multilingualism in football – Analysis of communication situations and strategies in multilingual football teams”.
This work focuses on a detailed linguistic analysis of verbal and non-verbal communication behaviour based on the example of FC Wacker Innsbruck, a multilingual football team in the Austrian national league. Particular attention is given to the following three questions: 1) How does communication work in this multilingual team? 2) What are the reasons for the functioning or non-functioning of communication or, in other words, which strategies and structures have been developed by the club to achieve successful communication? 3) How can these strategies be optimised in order to make communication more effective and help the players integrate more quickly?
The communication behaviour of FC Wacker Innsbruck will be analysed using audio and video recordings of a total of five training sessions, three physiotherapy sessions and three German lessons with a Spanish player, as well as making use of ten qualitative interviews and participant observation. Data will also include ten further qualitative interviews with players and coaches of (inter)national football teams such as FC St. Gallen, FC Red Bull Salzburg, SV Werder Bremen, SV Sandhausen and RFK Terek Grosny. In this way general conclusions regarding multilingual football clubs will be drawn.
Deutsche Zusammenfassung
Es handelt sich dabei um die Fortsetzung der im Jahr 2009 entstandenen Diplomarbeit zum Thema „Il plurilinguismo nel calcio – L’analisi delle situazioni e delle strategie comunicative attorno a squadre multilingui.”.
Der Fokus liegt dabei auf einer detaillierten sprachwissenschaftlichen Analyse des verbalen sowie nonverbalen Kommunikationsverhaltens am Beispiel des FC Wacker Innsbruck, mehrsprachiger Fußballklub der österreichischen Bundesliga. Folgende drei Fragen stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt des Interesses: (1) Wie funktioniert die Kommunikation in dieser mehrsprachigen Mannschaft? (2) Was sind die Ursachen für das Funktionieren oder Nicht-Funktionieren bzw. welche Strategien und Strukturen hat der Verein entwickelt, damit die Kommunikation gelingt? (3) Wie können diese Strategien optimiert werden, um die Kommunikation effektiver zu gestalten und die Integration von Spielern zu beschleunigen?
Anhand von Audio- und Videoaufnahmen von insgesamt fünf Trainingseinheiten, drei Physiotherapiesitzungen und drei Deutschstunden mit jeweils einem spanischen Legionär sowie anhand von zehn qualitativen Interviews und teilnehmender Beobachtung soll das Kommunikationsverhalten beim FC Wacker Innsbruck analysiert werden.
Das Datenmaterial wird zudem von zehn weiteren qualitativen Interviews mit Spielern und Trainern von (inter-)nationalen Fußballmannschaften, wie FC St. Gallen, FC Red bull Salzburg, SV Werder Bremen, SV Sandhausen und RFK Terek Grosny ergänzt, um folglich allgemeine Schlüsse in Bezug auf multilinguale Fußballklubs ziehen zu können.
