Martin is a clinical health psychologist, who joined us from the Medical University of Innsbruck by being appointed as full Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology in 2010. Martin was head of the Department of Sport Science at the University of Innsbruck from 3/2013 to 3/2020 and served as dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Sport Science of our University from 4/2020-3/2024.

Coming from a background of clinical health psychology I have started with studies in chronic pain and surgical patients. In a further step, I engaged in quality of life research with chronically ill people. Some cooperations brought me to body image related research and my trainig in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) drove me to a focus on exercise as an intervention for improving health as well as for psychological well-being and behaviour change. At the moment my research is focusing on acute exercise intervention, risk behaviour, prevention and self-regulation.
