BIP "Interdisciplinary Community Service Learning"

BIP International and Interdisciplinary Community Service Learning

The BIP "Interdisciplinary Community Service Learning" (iCSL) module at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam allows Master’s students to work in interdisciplinary teams on real-world societal challenges, collaborating with societal partners and producing a joint report and public presentation. It combines academic research with practical community engagement to address complex issues through transdisciplinary approaches.

This innovative module invites Master’s students to engage directly with real-world societal challenges through transdisciplinary research and collaborative problem-solving. Participants join an interdisciplinary student team, working alongside societal partners to address different aspects of a shared challenge. Each student contributes their own expertise while learning to integrate perspectives from other disciplines, connecting individual insights to the broader societal issue.

Throughout the programme, teams meet regularly to reflect, synthesize findings, and consider the wider implications of their work. The module culminates in a joint interdisciplinary report and a public dialogue event, where students present their results to both scientific and community audiences, as part of the NWO-funded Science with Society initiative.
