  • cryptography (elliptic curve cryptography)
  • fractal sets
  • kinematics and robotics
  • mathematical chess problems (see Noam Elkies on enumerative chess problems) and various unorthodox mathematical problems
  • real algebraic geometry (PhD thesis, sums of squares)
